Realistic Water Simulation with Bubbles – Seamless Loop

At AquaVFX, we specialize in high-quality fluid simulations for VFX, animation, and motion design. This project was a personal study focused on improving simulation and rendering techniques, resulting in a 100-frame seamless looping animation.

🔹 Preparing for a Fluid Simulation 🔹

Before running a fluid simulation, it’s essential to prepare the geometry properly. Here’s the initial setup for this project:
Imported the model into Houdini
Refined the mesh for better collision accuracy
Filled the interior with particles to initialize the simulation

Proper collision setup ensures realistic interactions between the fluid and the object. Stay tuned for the final result! 🚀

🔹 Adding Motion & Turbulence to the Fluid 🔹

In this step, I focused on controlling the movement of the fluid inside the container. Using DOP Network nodes, I added:
Rotational motion for a natural swirling effect
Turbulence & randomness to make the movement more organic
POP Metaball Force to create localized forces within the fluid

These forces help achieve a more dynamic flow. Can’t wait to share the final render! 🚀

🔹 Creating a Seamless Loop for Mesh Animation 🔹

To make the fluid simulation loop perfectly, I used a blend technique with VDBs:
Time Shifted the animation 100 frames back
✅ Converted both original & time-shifted meshes to VDB
✅ Used Volume Mix to gradually blend between the two states

This ensures a smooth transition, allowing the animation to seamlessly repeat after 100 frames. 🔄

🔹 Looping Bubbles in Fluid Simulation 🔹

To make the bubbles loop seamlessly, I used a randomized removal technique:
Time-shifted the animation 100 frames back (same as the main mesh)
Randomly deleted some bubbles in the original animation
Restored randomly deleted bubbles from the time-shifted version

This creates a natural, continuous cycle, making the bubbles appear dynamic yet perfectly looped! 🔄✨
